Adelaide ‘disappointed’ as high-flying forward Shane McAdam rejects contract and ‘quits’ club

Adelaide’s high-flying forward Shane McAdam is walking out of the AFL club.

The Crows confirmed that McAdam wants out after respected South Australian football journalist Michelangelo Rucci said the player “will seek a trade to Melbourne”.

McAdam is 28 and does not have a contract beyond this year.

In a statement, Adelaide said McAdam had spoken to them and told them of “his intention to consider rival offers”.

“The Crows have a contract in front of (him),” the club said.

“(And we) would be disappointed if he did not continue his career at West Lakes.”

Reports of the length of the contract have ranged from 2-3 years.

“The club will continue talks with McAdam and his management in the lead up to the upcoming trade period,” the club said.

McAdam was a mature-age pre-draft selection to Carlton from Sturt in 2018, and was then immediately traded to the Crows.

McAdam booted eight goals in his last three games of this season and Rucci said he was demanding a longer extension than what Adelaide were prepared to give.

“He has quit the Adelaide Football Club,” Rucci said on SEN.

“Rejecting a two-year offer when he wanted three.

“He has had talks with Melbourne and will seek a trade to Melbourne.”

Rucci also hinted that McAdam was at odds with the club’s fitness bosses.

He has played 50 games for Adelaide since 2020, but only managed seven this season.

“There are also some other issues that have emerged through the year in that there’s clearly a difference of opinion or style between him and the fitness coaches of Adelaide as to what was best for his preparations and so forth,” Rucci said.

“I’m not going to take sides. I’ve heard one element of it. I can understand the other element of it.

“When you get that sort of unsettled moment in a footy club that can keep rolling along.

“He doesn’t believe Adelaide’s the place he should be playing.

“He has put out the feeler to Melbourne, they’ve put their arms around him, and he’ll be playing for Melbourne if the trade can be done which is the next phase of all this.”

McAdam has kicked 72 goals since his debut in 2020. In Round 22 this year, he bagged four goals against Brisbane, which equalled his PB in an AFL game.

His highest disposal game is 16 which was against West Coast in 2022.

The Crows are desperate to keep the defender but 7NEWS AFL reporter Mitch Cleary says Doedee has spoken to the Lions and the offer is ‘weighing on his mind’.
