That might be the most bizarre play of the season … certainly of this finals series!
Early in the second term of Friday night’s Elimination Final between Carlton and Sydney, Matt Owies got out the back inside 50 and ran into a wide open goal.
Then, as put by Channel 7’s James Brayshaw, Owies “did everything he could to miss it.”

Despite being point blank range from the goals, Owies misfired a handball to Charlie Curnow, however Owies was still able to collect the ball again on the goaline and just get it on his boot.
“Owies … what was he thinking!? Just kick the goal!,” Brayshaw exclaimed.
In what should’ve been a guaranteed goal, the umpire called for a score review as Blues fans nervously awaited the verdict before the ARC gave it the all clear in a huge sigh of relief for Michael Voss’ side.
Afterwards, a grinning Voss embraced with Owies on the sidelines after the Blues forward came to the bench in a humorous moment, with the player and coach sharing a laugh.
Though had it not ended with a goal, you sense Owies would’ve got a slightly different reception from Voss.
“Look at these two, they can’t believe it! All’s well that ends well,” Brayshaw said, while Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge noted: “They’re the ones you can smile about.”
Fellow Channel 7 caller Brian Taylor added “Tried to be too selfless here Owies … have a look at this when he came to the bench, Michael Voss said: ‘What are you doing?’ in a nice way. Just kick the goal would be the advice.”
