Swans free agent off the table, Blues table offer to Silvagni

AFL Media’s Cal Twomey has offered the latest on this year’s AFL Trade Period, with two players set to remove themselves from discussions.

Lewis Melican is out of contract with the Swans and with multiple clubs on the lookout for a key back, had been floated for a move.

But the 26-year-old, who has largely been surplus to Sydney’s needs across the last three seasons, will sign a new deal, according to Twomey.

“48 remaining free agents, we’ll see a couple more sign on soon,” he began on SEN Breakfast.

“Lewis Melican will be off the table. He’s an unrestricted free agent at the Swans, he was going to be part of that key defender carousel, but he’s going to stay there.”

Other key defenders who have been linked in some form to a fresh start include Tom Doedee, Caleb Marchbank, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Esava Ratugolea, Nick Haynes, Adam Tomlinson, Tom Clurey and more.

Melican played seven consecutive games from Rounds 11-18 this year but has found himself behind Dane Rampe, Tom McCartin and Robbie Fox in the Swans’ key back stocks.

Twomey also revealed Jack Silvagni is staring at a new deal from Carlton as a fresh contract moves towards completion.

Silvagni’s future has been the subject of much speculation in 2023 and on multiple occasions has been reported to be on the outer at the Blues.

But impressive form later this season, including a 19-disposal, four-goal effort against Port Adelaide in Round 18, before an untimely knee injury has been influential in a new deal.

“Jack Silvagni, he’s been offered a deal to stay at Carlton. Those negotiations are now in full swing, he’s an unrestricted free agent but has a multi-year deal on the table from the Blues,” Twomey added.

Twomey also had updates on the futures of Shane McAdam, Jade Gresham, Paddy Dow, Adam Tomlinson and more.
